Do you find yourself always going right to the negative when you hear or see something? Do you tend to always think negative thoughts? If so, don’t be alarmed. Many of us have a natural instinct to think negative thoughts before happy thoughts. But you can teach yourself how to have happy thoughts. And the good news is that having happy thoughts is a lot easier than you might think. In fact, this post is going to give you some simple tricks to help train you to have happy thoughts and by the end, you will have a new weapon to use against those negative thoughts.
Why The Need To Have Happy Thoughts?
If you didn’t already know this, our thoughts affect our mood. Same thing with our outlook. If you stub your toe in the morning, you get upset and yell either at the bed or yourself. You in turn put yourself into a sour mood. From there, unknowingly, you have a negative outlook. When you leave for work and get stuck in traffic, you immediately say to yourself “could this day get any worse?”
Your thoughts, actions, outlook and mood are all connected. When one take a turn into negative town, all the rest line up for the ride. So it is fair to say then that when you switch over to having happy thoughts, your actions, outlook and mood will all follow along as well.
And that is the goal, to be a happier person and strive for more out of life. You can’t do that when you are in a sour mood all of the time. So what are some tricks to help you achieve happy thoughts?
4 Tricks To Having Happy Thoughts
It’s All In Your Control
Know that your thoughts are completely controlled by you. You decide to get sour or be happy. You decide to allow a stubbed toe or traffic affect your mood. You are in complete control. This is important to understand and accept. The world is not out to get you. You think it is when something bad happens because you allow yourself to get upset.
Take control back. When you stub your toe, brush it off. When you get caught up in traffic, find a great song on the radio and sing along. Find ways to stop yourself from going right to the negative. Remember you can do this because you are in control.
Find The Positive In Life
To build on top of being in control, learn to find the positive in the situation. When you stub your toe, be thankful you have a nice bed to sleep in or a roof over your head. When stuck in traffic, be thankful you have a job, a car, can listen to your favorite radio show, etc. Look for and acknowledge the positive in all situations, no matter how small.
The key here is that last sentence. Start small. It might seem cheesy at first to be thankful you have a roof over your head, but as you make the change from negative thoughts to happy thoughts, you will find that it is not cheesy at all to be thankful for the things you have. As time goes on, you will also find it gets easier to find positives in all situations as well.
Of course, in order to have happy thoughts, you have to be realistic. You can’t find the positive in situations that are not there. For example, if you are trying to lose weight, you might start thinking about how amazing you look but in your heart, you know that you haven’t noticed a change. It will be hard to stay positive when you try to keep telling yourself how amazing you look.
Instead, you have to find some other happy thought to have. Maybe you do seem to look the same in the mirror, but you notice that your jeans are looser or the measurement around your waist shows it is getting smaller. Focus on these things as your happy thoughts. When they are real and you truly believe them, the thoughts will carry you much further than if you try to lie your way through them.
Going back to the start where I talked about how your thoughts, actions and mood are all related, so too are your words. After all, many of the things we speak are simply our thoughts aloud. So, you have to make sure you start talking in a positive way as well so that you more easily have happy thoughts.
For example, instead of saying things like “I haven’t lost any weight” say “I feel so much better” or “my clothes are much looser”. Take negative words and find ways to turn them into a positive sentence. I do this all of the time myself.
You’re Not Perfect
Lastly, just know that will all of the tricks mentioned above, you still will have negative thoughts. Accept this. It is who we are – we make mistakes. The key is to not dwell on the fact that we are having a negative thought but instead catch ourselves when it happens and find a way to change it over to a happy thought. Again, in time this will come much easier to you.
In the end, it is important to have happy thoughts. Having positive thoughts instead of negative ones will completely change your life for the better. You will notice that your mood and outlook changes for the better and in turn you will be happier than you were before.
