One whole day without complaining. This was the challenge I decided to take on. Go 24 hours without thinking that a situation is unacceptable or unsatisfactory. That was my goal.
What you allow yourself to think decides how you act and how you feel. I thought taking a day away from complaining would be a worthwhile activity.
I set a reminder on my phone every hour of the day to remind me not to complain. If I had a complaint my rule was I had to replace it with gratitude, take action to fix it or create a solution for it. Below is how I used those 3 techniques.
Tips For Overcoming Complaining
Replacing Complaints With Gratitude
I had several complaints that came to mind. A few common ones were feeling cold or hungry.
I found that answering those complaints with gratitude was an effective way to handle it. My walk home from church that evening was a mile and it was 20 degrees out. Instead of thinking I feel cold, I thought in 15 minutes this walk will be over. I will be in my warm apartment and I am grateful for that.
Going from thinking I am cold to being grateful was a simple change in mindset but powerful. Instead of focusing on the cold I enjoyed the walk and I felt happier.
Replacing Complaints With Action
Usually complaints come from a place of laziness. I would think I don’t feel like going to the gym today. Instead of complaining I would replace my complaint with action.
I find that when I have a complaint it is usually something that just requires effort to get started. Going off of my gym example, there are days when I don’t feel motivated to exercise. If I can get through that first challenge of moving and just go to the gym I am fine. Once I am at the gym I am there and I am going to do my workout like I want to.
Don’t want to go to the gym? Go to the gym. Don’t feel like cleaning? Start scrubbing. Insert any activity. Start doing it.
This worked. If you don’t want to do a task but actually do it. It is a mental win. Completing a task was a good feeling. The hump of getting started is the challenging part.
Replacing Complaints With Solutions
One of my favorite complaint solutions was to replace the complaint with a solution. If I had a complaint I would find a way to fix the complaint.
I was running late for work that day. It was because of additional traffic. Instead of thinking “This traffic is annoying I am going to be late” I thought “This traffic is going to make me late, but I will leave earlier tomorrow”.
This can work on any problem you have. Forcing yourself into this thinking will help you to resolve problems.
People want problems solved. If you can effectively replace complaints with solutions you will be a person people want to work with and be around.
Doing your Own No Complaint Day
In the future I will try and plan these days on occasion. Taking the time to be mindful of complaining created some meaningful changes for me.
If you want to get started with this here is what I would recommend:
- Set a specific day to do it
- Set a reminder for every 1-2 hours to remind you not to complain
- Try using all three solutions I have mentioned. They all can make a huge difference in your mental outlook.
It can be life changing when you realize how much your mindset can affect your mood and the outcome of events in your life.
It is easy to get into this rut where you start thinking “I can’t do this” or “this is too hard”. Being able to acknowledge the complaint or negative thought is the first step. Think to yourself why am I thinking this way?
Is it because you actually are not capable of completing a task or is it just a task where you might not solve it on the first try?
Try my three strategies for dealing with complaints. Are you unhappy with the way things in your life are? Remind yourself to be grateful for what you do have.
Have a task you have to do? Just get started doing it. Sitting around complaining about it won’t change anything for you.
Do you have a problem in your life that you are complaining about? Find a solution to it. Being able to solve problems is going to increase your happiness and will impress your employer.
