Do you want to know how to solve any problem you have? It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small, complex or simple. There is one way to solve it, by forgetting about it. Sounds crazy right? After all, how are you going to solve a problem if you never think about it or address it? Won’t it always be there?
As crazy as it sounds, forgetting about your problem does work to solve it. When we are focusing on a problem or an issue we have, we tend to put pressure on ourselves to come up with a solution. Many times this backfires and we become more stressed about trying to solve it. This added stress actually takes us further and further away from solving the problem.
When we stop thinking about the problem or issue, we are able to remove any stress from the problem and allow our minds to freely think, both consciously and unconsciously. It is in the time of unconscious thinking when we best solve our most complex problems.
Solving A Problem By Not Thinking About It
Recently, I had an issue on my hands where I was trying to run a complex formula in Excel. I kept getting an error message that my formula was wrong. No matter how much I thought about it or how much I researched it, I couldn’t fix it. I became frustrated and mad at myself. Eventually I knew I had to step away from it.
I headed off to the gym and after lifting weights, I was walking on a treadmill. I flipped through the channels on the television and came upon the show Wipeout. If you aren’t familiar with it, it’s a show where contestants try to go through an obstacle course without falling into the water below.
It was completely mindless television and I quickly found myself laughing. Then it happened. I realized the mistake that I was making in my Excel formula. After I finished my workout, I went home and got my Excel formula working.
This is just one example of how not thinking about a problem allowed me to solve the problem I had. I can recite many more examples just like this, where I was driving along or on vacation when the solution to my problems came to me.
It Works For Others As Well
I have many friends who have used this practice successfully as well. In fact, Einstein was riding in a streetcar when he solved one of his biggest problems. By allowing yourself to walk away and tackle other things in your life, you will increase the likelihood of solving your biggest problems. I’ve shown you that it worked for me, my friends, and even Albert Einstein. Why not give it a try yourself. What have you got to lose, other than the problem that has been nagging at your recently.
