Thank you for visiting Breath of Optimism! I created this Start Here section to save you time from jumping all around this site trying to figure out what it is all about. Of course, you’ll want to take a few minutes to search around the site too. Below you will find the best and most important information you need to know to get off on the right foot.
What Is Positive Thinking?
In order to understand what Breath of Optimism is all about, you need to first understand what positive thinking is. Below is how I view positive thinking:
Positive thinking is a mental attitude or worldview that interprets situations and events as being best, meaning that in some way for factors that may not be fully comprehended, the present moment is in an optimum state.
In other words, I believe that great things are happening all around us, all of the time. We just have to notice them. This view also extends into the future as well. This means that everything is going to work out for us in and ideal way.
Note that in the moment, we might not think what is happening to us is ideal, but it is, and at some point in the future we will realize this.
What Positive Thinking Is Not
Before I get into helping you navigate this site, I want to take a moment to set some realistic expectations for you upfront.
1. Positive thinking does not mean nothing bad will happen to you or in your life.
Bad things are going to happen in your life. Bad things happen to me at times. The key is learning how to react and respond to these events. Remember, the definition of positive thinking is that good things are happening all around us, we just have to notice them. So, the next time you are stuck in traffic, instead of getting angry or upset, take a deep breath, count to five and start looking for the positive. It can be anything from your favorite song playing on the radio to enjoying the bright sun shinning down on you. Whatever it may be, go with it and let yourself live in the moment.
2. Positive thinking is not about delusion.
Many people confuse positive thinking as a begin delusional. They think that if you see only the good, you are setting yourself up for more hurt and pain in life because you aren’t living in reality. You can think positively and still life in reality. As I noted above, bad things can and do happen. It is just a matter of acknowledging them but not allowing yourself to focus on the bad and allow it to fester and become who you are at your core.
3. Positive thinking will not get you $1 million dollars and super hot husband/wife.
Positive thinking is a state of mind. It’s not a wish you put out there and hope will one day come true. If you want your dreams to come true, you need to believe that they will come true and begin acting as if they are true.
4. Positive thinking doesn’t happen overnight.
You can’t just flip a switch and think positively 100% of the time. In fact, you will never think positively 100% of the time. I can’t and I doubt anyone does. As you learn to think positively, you will have fewer negative thoughts. When negative thoughts do manifest, you will be able to fight them off. This will become easier with time.
So Why Positive Thinking?
You may be wondering why even bother with positive thinking. It’s simple really: why go through life beaten down and defeated? Don’t you want everything out of life and to have a great time? You can’t do this if you live a life full of negative thoughts.
If you are a negative thinker, every time something bad happens to you, you are going to speak words of defeat. “Nothing ever works out for me” or “that’s just my luck”. Once you allow one negative thought into your mind, it’s easy for it to spiral out of control and you start finding the negative in everything. You become defeated and depressed.
This isn’t living life to your fullest potential. There is so much more in life that you miss out on when you focus on the negative. Stop being a victim of your life and circumstances and start being the champion of your life and living your life to its fullest.
